    Automatic control program creation using concurrent Evolutionary Computing

    Over the past decade, Genetic Programming (GP) has been the subject of a significant amount of research, but this has resulted in the solution of few complex real -world problems. In this work, I propose that, for some relatively simple, non safety -critical embedded control applications, GP can be used as a practical alternative to software developed by humans. Embedded control software has become a branch of software engineering with distinct temporal, interface and resource constraints and requirements. This results in a characteristic software structure, and by examining this, the effective decomposition of an overall problem into a number of smaller, simpler problems is performed. It is this type of problem amelioration that is suggested as a method whereby certain real -world problems may be rendered into a soluble form suitable for GP. In the course of this research, the body of published GP literature was examined and the most important changes to the original GP technique of Koza are noted; particular focus is made upon GP techniques involving an element of concurrency -which is central to this work. This search highlighted few applications of GP for the creation of software for complex, real -world problems -this was especially true in the case of multi thread, multi output solutions. To demonstrate this Idea, a concurrent Linear GP (LGP) system was built that creates a multiple input -multiple output solution using a custom low -level evolutionary language set, combining both continuous and Boolean data types. The system uses a multi -tasking model to evolve and execute the required LGP code for each system output using separate populations: Two example problems -a simple fridge controller and a more complex washing machine controller are described, and the problems encountered and overcome during the successful solution of these problems, are detailed. The operation of the complete, evolved washing machine controller is simulated using a graphical LabVIEWapplication. The aim of this research is to propose a general purpose system for the automatic creation of control software for use in a range of problems from the target problem class -without requiring any system tuning: In order to assess the system search performance sensitivity, experiments were performed using various population and LGP string sizes; the experimental data collected was also used to examine the utility of abandoning stalled searches and restarting. This work is significant because it identifies a realistic application of GP that can ease the burden of finite human software design resources, whilst capitalising on accelerating computing potential

    Why do narcissists disregard social-etiquette norms? A test of two explanations for why narcissism relates to offensive-language use

    Narcissists often fail to abide by norms for polite social conduct, but why? The current study addressed this issue by exploring reasons why narcissists use more offensive language (i.e., profanity) than non-narcissists. In this study, 602 participants completed a survey in which they responded on a measure of trait narcissism, rated several offensive words on the degree to which the words were attention-grabbing and offensive, and then indicated how frequently they used the words. Consistent with the idea that narcissists use offensive language to gain attention, narcissists were incrementally more likely to use offensive language if they perceived such language to be highly attention-grabbing, and they were also more likely to perceive offensive language as attention-grabbing. Consistent with the idea that narcissists use more offensive language because they are less sensitive to the offensiveness of the language, an additional mediation analysis showed that narcissists perceived offensive language as less offensive than non-narcissists, a perception that, in turn, enhanced use of offensive language. Thus, this study provides evidence for two mechanisms that underlie narcissists’ frequent use of offensive language, and broadly contributes to the understudied issue of why narcissists violate social-etiquette norms

    White matter changes and confrontation naming in retired aging national football league athletes

    Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we assessed the relationship of white matter integrity and performance on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in a group of retired professional football players and a control group. We examined correlations between fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) with BNT T-scores in an unbiased voxelwise analysis processed with tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). We also analyzed the DTI data by grouping voxels together as white matter tracts and testing each tract's association with BNT T-scores. Significant voxelwise correlations between FA and BNT performance were only seen in the retired football players (p < 0.02). Two tracts had mean FA values that significantly correlated with BNT performance: forceps minor and forceps major. White matter integrity is important for distributed cognitive processes, and disruption correlates with diminished performance in athletes exposed to concussive and subconcussive brain injuries, but not in controls without such exposure

    Regulation and Measurement of Nitrification in Terrestrial Systems

    Nitric oxide (NO) is a relatively short-lived trace gas that reacts with oxygen in the troposphere to produce the air pollutant ozone. It also reacts with water vapor to form nitric and nitrous acids, which acidify precipitation and increase N deposition. Models currently used to predict soil NO fluxes are based on the assumption that NO flux is proportional to the gross rate of nitrification or N mineralization; however, this assumption has not been tested because of the difficulty in measuring gross N-cycling rates in situ. We measured soil NO fluxes, gross and net N-cycling rates, and a variety of other soil characteristics in the forest floor and intact soil cores at nine undisturbed forest and rangeland ecosystems of New Mexico, Utah, and Oregon, USA, to determine which soil variables were most closely related to soil NO flux. Soil NO fluxes ranged from a low of 0.02 ng N·m22·s21, prior to wetting in a western hemlock–sitka spruce forest on the Oregon coast, to a high of 6.74 ng N·m22·s21, one hour after soil wetting in a juniper woodland of central Oregon. In contrast to our expectations, neither gross nitrification nor gross mineralization was correlated with soil NO flux. Fluxes were positively correlated with net rates of mineralization and nitrification, soil NO3 2 concentrations, bulk density, and pH, and negatively correlated with gross rates of NO3 2 consumption in the forest floor, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil C:N, and soil water content. Principal-component analysis showed that NO flux after water addition (2 cm of water) had a strong negative correlation with microbial demand for N (as indicated by net mineralization, net nitrification, SOC, and C:N). Our results suggest that, even in well-drained soils, NO efflux is limited more by NO consumption than by NO production. As a result, models utilizing the more easily measured net rates, rather than gross rates, may be better predictors of soil NO fluxes across a range of ecosystems

    The Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS)

    This paper describes the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) under construction at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of the Australian National University (ANU) for the ANU 2.3m telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory. WiFeS is a powerful integral field, double-beam, concentric, image-slicing spectrograph designed to deliver excellent thoughput, wavelength stability, spectrophotometric performance and superb image quality along with wide spectral coverage throughout the 320-950 nm wavelength region. It provides a 25x38 arcsec. field with 0.5 arcsec. sampling along each of twenty five 38X1 arcsec slitlets. The output format is optimized to match the 4096x4096 pixel CCD detectors in each of two cameras individually optimized for the blue and the red ends of the spectrum, respectively. A process of "interleaved nod-and-shuffle" will be applied to permit quantum noise-limited sky subtraction. Using VPH gratings, spectral resolutions of 3000 and 7000 are provided. The full spectral range is covered in a single exposure at R=3000, and in two exposures in the R=7000 mode. The use of transmissive coated optics, VPH gratings and optimized mirror coatings ensures a throughput (including telescope atmosphere and detector) > 30% over a wide spectral range. The concentric image-slicer design ensures an excellent and uniform image quality across the full field. To maximize scientific return, the whole instrument is configured for remote observing, pipeline data reduction, and the accumulation of calibration image libraries.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science, 16 pages, 14 figure

    Ultrathin high-resolution flexographic printing using nanoporous stamps

    Since its invention in ancient times, relief printing, commonly called flexography, has been used to mass-produce artifacts ranging from decorative graphics to printed media. Now, higher-resolution flexography is essential to manufacturing low-cost, large-area printed electronics. However, because of contact-mediated liquid instabilities and spreading, the resolution of flexographic printing using elastomeric stamps is limited to tens of micrometers. We introduce engineered nanoporous microstructures, comprising polymer-coated aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as a next-generation stamp material. We design and engineer the highly porous microstructures to be wetted by colloidal inks and to transfer a thin layer to a target substrate upon brief contact. We demonstrate printing of diverse micrometer-scale patterns of a variety of functional nanoparticle inks, including Ag, ZnO, WO[subscript 3], and CdSe/ZnS, onto both rigid and compliant substrates. The printed patterns have highly uniform nanoscale thickness (5 to 50 nm) and match the stamp features with high fidelity (edge roughness, ~0.2 ÎĽm). We derive conditions for uniform printing based on nanoscale contact mechanics, characterize printed Ag lines and transparent conductors, and achieve continuous printing at a speed of 0.2 m/s.     Amperometric Screen-Printed Galactose Biosensor for Cell Toxicity Applications

ABSTRACT: This paper reports the development and application of a biosensor for the amperometric determination of galactose in the presence of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells with and without a hepatotoxic agent. The biosensor was fabricated by drop-coating 1.5% cellulose acetate on a 3×3mm screen-printed carbon electrode followed by depositing 2 U of galactose oxidase. The electrodes dimensions were reduced to 3×0.5mm before measurements. Hepatocellular carcinoma cells were utilized for in vitro toxicity testing by evaluating the effect of paracetamol on galactose uptake. The amperometric responses to galactose indicated that the inhibition of uptake was directly proportional to the concentration of paracetamol following 24h of exposure to the hepatocellular carcinoma cells. These results demonstrate that the fabricated biosensor may be used for the real-time monitoring of cell metabolism and toxicity

    Magnetoreception in the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus): influence of weak frequency-modulated radio frequency fields

    The mammalian magnetic sense is predominantly studied in species with reduced vision such as mole-rats and bats. Far less is known about surface-dwelling (epigeic) rodents with well-developed eyes. Here, we tested the wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus for magnetoreception using a simple behavioural assay in which mice are allowed to build nests overnight in a visually symmetrical, circular arena. The tests were performed in the ambient magnetic field or in a field rotated by 90 degrees. When plotted with respect to magnetic north, the nests were bimodally clustered in the northern and southern sectors, clearly indicating that the animals used magnetic cues. Additionally, mice were tested in the ambient magnetic field with a superimposed radio frequency magnetic field of the order of 100 nT. Wood mice exposed to a 0.9 to 5 MHz frequency sweep changed their preference from north-south to east-west. In contrast to birds, however, a constant frequency field tuned to the Larmor frequency (1.33 MHz) had no effect on mouse orientation. In sum, we demonstrated magnetoreception in wood mice and provide first evidence for a radical-pair mechanism in a mammal
